Legal highs

Legal highs’ are substances that are designed to mimic the effects of illegal drugs like ecstasy and cocaine but are not controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act. Often advertised as bath salts or plant food.

Legal highs are on the increase in a big way at the moment, and as soon as the law catches up the drugs change molecularly and become legal again. In 2009 24 legal highs hit the market, in 2010 41 new legal highs, in 2011 49 new legal highs and so far in 2012 57 new ones have been ‘launched’. Currently there are 643 websites where you can buy legal highs over the internet. Due to the ever changing a new aspect of legal highs, knowledge about them is very limited and this includes from the medical profession, we don’t really know what the long term effects of many of these drugs might be. Therefore they are very dangerous.
