Information about Bulb Planting for Community Groups – A message from Amey

Amey, Sheffield’s City Council’s Streets Ahead contractor, values the contribution that community groups make to enhance the local environment and we are keen to support local communities achieve their bulb planting and community enhancements. We will provide hands on support, equipment, underground service checks and risk assessments to assist in carrying out these activities safely.

We work hard to raise awareness of safe working practice to protect the safety of road workers and the public. We view the safety of community groups and individuals as paramount when undertaking any improvement work on, or adjacent to the highway, to reduce the potential for accidents.

The process for getting your bulbs planted is:

1. Contact Streets Ahead on 0114 273 4567 or by email on  to advise us of:

Precise intended planting location. (A map would be most beneficial, but failing that, “the verge outside No234, Baslow Lane”)

Contact name and details for the group

Intended date and time of planting

Approximate numbers of individuals involved

Quantity and type of bulbs you want to plant

A commitment to supply your own sturdy footwear and wear our hi-visibility vests

A commitment to the requirements of and sign our site-specific risk assessment

A commitment to undertake a brief on-site induction.

2. Streets Ahead will

Obtain a full set of plans to identify underground services and CAT scan the site prior to planting

Liaise with the Community Group to make the appropriate arrangements for the bulb planting

Supply insulated spades and/or other planting tools

Complete a site specific risk assessment

Give a brief on-site induction

Undertaking checks with the utility companies takes two weeks, so please allow 2-3 weeks prior to your desired planting date to help us meet your needs.
