Safer Future Communities – South Yorkshire Network

In November 2012 elected Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) will replace police authorities in England and Wales. PCCs will be responsible for setting local community safety priorities and funding community activity to meet these.

What is the Safer Future Communities Project?

The Safer Future Communities Project is a new Sub Regional Network of Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) organisations, set up to engage with the new Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs).

The Key Aim of the network is to secure more effective working between the VCSE Sector, Community Safety Partnerships, PCCs and other statutory agencies that impact upon community safety.

The VCSE sector has expertise, trust and reach within the most disadvantaged communities inSouth Yorkshire. Through the new network, this expertise can help to shape the new Police and Crime Plan to make sure support for those in most need is included in the plan.

Why should VCSE organisations get involved?

We need to work together to ensure that the voice and expertise from the sector influences the Police and Crime Plan. Some funding that VCSE organisations currently access will be transferred to the PCC. This is not a finalised list but it will include:

  •  Community Safety Partnerships funding (100%)
  • Current Home Office DIP Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) funding
  • Other funding streams to be confirmed (e.g. some Youth Offending funding)

This funding will no longer be ring-fenced so could be spent on other competing priorities.

The Safer Futures Communities project will support the Sector to develop and communicate a convincing case about:

  • Local community safety needs
  • How these can be met
  • How the Sector’s work can contribute to achieving this.

How do I get involved?
